AquaMarine PROP

Foul release propeller coatings

What is AquaMarine PROP?

AquaMarine PROP is a revolutionary new foul release system with almost 10 years of research and development behind it. Tried and tested across the world our propeller coatings significantly reduce the amount of fouling settlements such as barnacles, mussels, tubeworm, sea squirts and seaweed from adhering to submerged propellers. As a result, boat performance relating to speed, fuel efficiency and maneuverability is undoubtedly improved.

Utilizing the same silicone technologies that are featured in our AquaMarine HULL and RIB kits, AquaMarine PROP is specifically engineered to create a super-smooth hydrophobic surface that marine life finds difficult to latch on to. In practice, the bond between the fouling organisms and the coating surface is so weak that it simply breaks by the weight of the organism itself or by the water pressure and current it is exposed to.

Subsequently, AquaMarine PROP does not use any harmful biocides to deter fouling. This means any biofoul can literally be wiped or jet washed off or dissuaded by the self-cleaning force of water generated by the propeller. Fortunately, the burden of cleaning propellers to maintain their condition and tackle the issue of fouling is solved with AquaMarine PROP foul release coatings.

AquaMarine PROP comes in three sizes - small, medium and large and is available in 2 colours; clear and teal. It offers boat owners everywhere a cost-effective and reliable foul release coating to protect your propellers from biofoul. AquaMarine is easy to apply and delivery usually takes just three working days for UK deliveries. Please contact us for questions about European delivery times.

Effect of fouling on propellers?

An accumulation of fouling on propellers that are left unprotected or infrequently used is inevitable.  Consequently, as early as 2 weeks submerged in water, propellers can expect the formation of brown slime to layer up which can afford a slight hindrance on boat performance. Proceeding to a mere 6 weeks left unattended, heavier species of macro-fouling will begin to develop like weed and barnacles, resulting in the onset of significant detrimental effects to a boat such as; labouring engines, increased cavitation, harmful vibrations leading to unstable propeller shafts and connecting components.

Benefits of using AquaMarine PROP?

By preventing marine fouling growth using the foul release system incorporated into AquaMarine PROP, a number of benefits can be achieved:

  • Speed: Inhibiting the accumulation of fouling dramatically improves boat speed. An ultra-smooth propeller surface allows for a more effective and efficient mode of action in the propelling motion that creates thrust as they out drive the surrounding water mass. The low friction surface decreases water drag and resistance meaning that more knots can be gained, improving acceleration and maintenance of speed.
  • Fuel consumption: Fuel consumption and fouling are a major issue in the boating industry. As propellers labour through the water with a coating of even a mild layer of fouling, this causes more fuel to be used in order to compensate for the loss in speed and engine power. AquaMarine PROP facilitates a decrease in fuel consumption with less engine power being required for optimum speeds.
  • Cavitation: A disruption in the propulsive pattern of propellers causing air bubbles to fill the resulting spiral-shaped water tunnel is known as cavitation. This effect can have a major impact on the efficiency of propellers as well as connecting components and is emphasized on those which are more heavily plagued by fouling. A reduction in this cavitation effect can be achieved when creating a smooth and unhindered surface by the application of an effective foul release coating.
  • Environmental impact: Many other boat paints on the market such as antifouls use toxic biocides to kill off any surrounding fouling species. The use of a super-slippery surface that sub-aquatic organisms cannot adhere to means that there is no need to use these harmful biocides, which have been shown to poison marine life. Additionally, reduced drag-resistance means that less fuel is used and therefore less CO2 emissions are produced.
  • Easy application: The AquaMarine Primer is easier & quicker for the applicator to use as it is a 1:1 primer/activator mix, as opposed to other antifouls and FRC’s which use a 4:1 mix. This means there is less chance of miscalculation. Similarly, AquaMarine PROP is a two coat system (one primer, one silicone) compared to other systems which require three coats (2 x primer & 1 coat silicone) meaning more time in application and drying times between coatings.

Before attempting application, ensure surface preparation instructions have been followed correctly.

AquaMarine PROP Surface Preparation

Remove anodes or protect them by applying masking tape. It is vital that the surfaces to be coated are absolutely clean and free of grease. To achieve this it is recommended that 3M Clean & Strip purple disc (part no.05816) is used to initially clean the components to be coated.Once this has been done, 80 grit wet paper should be used with warm water mixed with AquaMarine Prep Wash, to further clean these parts. Finally, wipe down the components with clean wipe rags soaked in acetone. Repeat until no further contamination appears on the rags. ATTENTION: From this point on, gloves must be worn at all times when handling the prepared surfaces to ensure that no contamination occurs from natural oils produced by our skin.

Protective clothing should be worn in accordance with the COSHH/MSDS sheets. Ensure that AquaMarine PROP Primer is mixed thoroughly and that all solids are removed from the bottom of the tin and are in suspension. Mix the primer and activator at a ratio of 1:1 using syringes. As a guide, a 20 inch three blade propeller will use approximately 100ml mixed total volume.

AquaMarine PROP Application

Please refer to all MSDS and Data Sheets before application of AquaMarine PROP.

Protective clothing should be worn in accordance with the COSHH/MSDS sheets.

Ensure that AquaMarine PROP Primer is mixed thoroughly and that all solids are removed from the bottom of the tin and are in suspension.

Mix the primer & activator at a ratio 1:1 using syringes. As a guide, a 20 inch three blade propeller will use approx. 100ml mixed total volume.

Apply one thin coat of AquaMarine PROP Primer to the surface to be protected using a paint brush.

It is important to only apply one coat and under no circumstances apply any additional coats of AquaMarine PROP Primer.

As soon as the primer is touch dry the AquaMarine PROP Finish coat can be applied.

Preferably bring AquaMarine PROP Finish to 5-20 °C for ease of application. If the product is too cold it will be very viscous to work with.

Material is supplied ready to use.

Using smooth even strokes apply the coating using a paint brush to the prepared areas.

Do not apply too much coating as it may run. At 75 microns it will form a good even cover.

The AquaMarine PROPFinish coat will ‘cure’ between 4 to 6 hours. Wait for 36 hours before vessel is returned to water.

AquaMarine PROP Maintenance

Props should be largely self-cleaning, as the mechanical movement should eradicate the majority of any growth that does occur. Should you wish to remove any superficial build-up manually, this can be done quickly and easily both in and out of the water. The gloved hand of a diver can simply wipe away any growth, whilst power washing is the most efficient way to clean the props when the boat is out of the water.
