AquaMarine HULL

Foul release hull coatings

AquaMarine HULL is an advanced foul release system which uses silicone technologies to provide a hydrophobic, super-slippery hull surface which makes it almost impossible for fouling species like barnacles, mussels, tubeworm, sea squirts and seaweed to adhere to. Essentially, the bond created by the adhesive glue or rooting of fouling species is weakened to the point that it can simply be wiped or jet washed off.

Unlike other foul defense and antifoul systems, our foul release hull coatings do not contain harmful biocides that can harm marine life and can also be applied to any hull surface. If you are looking for improvements in boat speed and maneuverability, a reduction in your fuel emissions while also reducing your carbon footprint, then coating your boat hull with AquaMarine HULL is the perfect choice to protect your boat from fouling.

After almost 10 years of research and development,  being tried and tested across the globe our boat coatings have proven to be undeniably effective,  long lasting and overall economically efficient. Aquamarine HULL is easy to apply and lasts up to 5 years without the need for laborious reapplication. AquaMarine HULL is available in two sizes: large & small in a wide range of attractive colours.

Effect of fouling on hulls?

The build up of fouling whether it be stubborn layers of barnacles or forests of sea weeds enhances surface roughness which directly impacts boat performance. Fouling on boat hulls is the main culprit when it comes to unwanted increases in hydrodynamic drag resistance leading to slower boat speeds, increase fuel consumption and also maneuverability.

Benefits of using AquaMarine HULL?

Applying AquaMarine HULL coating along with a healthy maintenance program can afford a number of benefits for boat owners:

  • Speed: Inhibiting the accumulation of fouling dramatically improves boat speed. An ultra-smooth hull surface allows boats to glide through the water. The low friction surface decreases water drag and resistance meaning that more knots can be gained, improving acceleration and maintenance of speed.
  • Fuel consumption: Fuel consumption and fouling are a major issue in the boating industry. Boats can labour through the water with engines struggling more to achive optimum speeds, even after being coated with just a mild layer of fouling, this causes more fuel to be used in order to compensate for the loss in speed and engine power. AquaMarine HULL facilitates a decrease in fuel consumption with less engine power being required for optimum speeds.
  • Maneuverability: An additional benefit of having a foul free low friction surface is improved maneuverability. Heavy fouling after a period of around 24 weeks in some regions can mean hindered regulated movement for large ships. For racing boats, even light fouling can severely impact the turning ability which is extremely detrimental to optimum racing performance.
  • Environmental impact: Many other boat paints on the market such as antifouls use toxic biocides to kill off any surrounding fouling species. The use of a super-slippery surface that sub-aquatic organisms cannot adhere to means that there is no need to use these harmful biocides, which have been shown to poison marine life. Additionally, reduced drag-resistance means that less fuel is used and therefore less CO2 emissions are produced.
  • Easy application: AquaMarine HULL coatings consist of an epoxy resin followed by 2 base coats and finally a silicone finish layer. Unlike antifouls, our paint solution does not contain any heavy metals and therefore does not need rigorous mixing for application. Additionally, any areas of the hull which have been worn away by over abrasive action can be simply topped up with the silicone finish coat and do not require a complete stripping back to the epoxy layer.

Before attempting application, ensure surface preparation instructions have been followed correctly.

AquaMarine HULL Surface Preparation

Ensure the hull surface is clean and free of all forms of fouling such as coral worm or barnacles. If necessary undertake an acid wash to ensure all residue is removed and that any previous antifoul paint is completely removed. Follow the instructions below for new surfaces and for previously antifouled surfaces as appropriate.

  1. Abrade lightly with an orbital sander using P220 grade paper to promote adhesion.
  2. Wash surface thoroughly using AquaMarine PREP WASH as directed.
  3. Rinse surface thoroughly with clean water, taking care to remove all traces of AquaMarine PREP WASH.
  4. Do not allow AquaMarine PREP WASH to dry onto the hull.
  5. In hot weather it is recommended that the surfaces being cleaned are cooled by pre-spraying with cold water before application.

  1. Remove all traces of antifoul back to the epoxy and inspect the hull for signs of damage or repair work that may need to be carried out. Any damage should be fully repaired before application of AquaMarine HULL.
  2. Once the hull is ready, lightly abrade with sandpaper to ensure a smooth finish.
  3. As with any painting project the better the preparation of the substrate, the better the end result will be.
  4. Wash surface thoroughly using AquaMarine PREP as directed. Rinse surface thoroughly with clean water, taking care to remove all traces of AquaMarine PREP. Do not allow AquaMarine PREP to dry onto the hull.
  5. In hot weather it is recommended that the surfaces being cleaned are cooled by pre-spraying with cold water before application.
  6. Once dry, apply 2 x coats of 2-part epoxy. We recommend Internationals’ ‘Interprotect’ 2-part epoxy primer. Once the epoxy is touch dry, i.e. a thumb print can be left on the surface but no traces of epoxy come off onto your skin, AquaMarine BASE should be applied, to ensure a good bond between the coatings is achieved.

HULL FINISH system creates an extremely slippery surface, especially when wet. When lifting the vessel in an out of the water it is strongly advised that the front and rear support slings are secured together with a tether to prevent the slings from sliding apart. Additionally, we recommend that the lifting slings are tied to the top side cleats. Foam pads should be used between cradle / support legs and the hull to avoid slippage.

AquaMarine HULL Application

Please refer to all MSDS and Data Sheets before application of AquaMarine HULL.

AquaMarine HULL BASE

Apply 'plastic' masking tape around the hull at the water line. Mask areas such as anodes where AquaMarine protection is not required.

Preferably bring HULL BASE paint to 5-20°C for ease of application. If the product is too cold it will be very viscous to work with.

Material supplied is ready to use.

Stir contents well prior to use.

HULL BASE is a high quality, deeply pigmented viscous paint that becomes mobile when applied.

HULL BASE requires one coat of 100 Microns (WFT). If covering over an opposing colour, a second thinner coat may be required.

Apply using the reticulated roller heads supplied.

Apply the coating with firm vertical and then horizontal strokes to give an even coating.

It is advisable to treat a 1 Metre Square area at a time.

Should there be gaps i.e; where support props have been moved, HULL BASE can be applied over the gap, ensuring that it overlaps the existing coating by at least 25mm.

Apply 'plastic' masking tape around the hull at the water line. Mask areas such as anodes where protection is not required.

Stir tin contents well before use. If the paint is too viscous, place the tin in a warm water bath.

HULL FINISH only requires one coat. To achieve the correct coating thickness (100 microns) apply HULL FINISH with a fine haired roller. Do not apply too much coating as it may run. At 100 microns it will form a good even cover and self-level.

Should there be gaps i.e: where support props have been moved, HULL FINISH can be applied over hte gap (even when it has cured) ensuring that it overlaps the existing coating by at least 25mm.

After applying HULL FINISH, ideally the vessel should be left for 36 hours before the boat is returned to the water.

AquaMarine HULL Maintenance

Dive cleaning, otherwise known as hull cleaning, is a convenient and cost effective method of maintaining the underside of your vessel between lifting.

In most cases all foul can be removed from a vessel’s hull, propeller and underwater running gear to return peak performance by simply using a rubber squeegee or foam sponge, leaving your boat clean and the organisms in their natural environment.

Most marinas worldwide will offer this service either as a one-off dive or as part of a regular maintenance program.

Scrubbis Brush

Scrubbis makes it easy to remove algae and other coatings from your hull. You clean it by yourself while the boat is in the water. The cleaning head has a buoyancy of 2 kg which continuously push it against the hull and flexible flanges which follows the shape of the hull and keel. Scrubbis should be used regularly from once a month to once a week depending on the water.

Once out of the water the hull should be lightly power washed to remove any fouling that has managed to attach itself. Any stubborn organisms can be easily removed by using a rubber scraper.
