Frequently Asked Questions

Applying AquaMarine PROP is extremely easy. Once you have prepared the primer and activator, you simply open the AquaMarine PROP tin and paint. There's no additives, no overcoating time issues and because it's brush-on or roll-on, there's no need to worry about cross-contamination with other boats.

How Much AquaMarine Prop Do I Need?

Please see our application chart or ring our customer service team on 01282 873320 - call us on 01282 873 320

What Preparation is Needed?

All props, shafts, trim tabs, etc should be thoroughly sanded back to their bare surfaces, cleaned and then wiped with acetone. Once you have bare metal , you then need to apply the AquaMarine etch primer. This increases the surface area, making application more effective. Once you have done this, wipe all surfaces to be coated with acetone. Gloves should be worn from this point onwards to avoid contamination.

Where Can I Find The Data Sheets?

We have a whole page dedicated to datasheets for AquaMarine HULL, PROP and RIB. All the sheets are fully downloadable / printable.

In The Event That I Damage The Foul Release Coating, Can I Repair It Easily?

If the coating is damaged or scratched, the affected area should be cleaned thoroughly and AquaMarine PROP reapplied with an overlap onto the previous coat by a minimum of 25mm. This can be carried 1 week or 1 year after first application, as there are no time scales with over-coating issues. N.B. The uneven build up of coating layers may effect propeller harmonics.

How Long Does AquaMarine PROP Last?

AquaMarine PROP is not ablative, does not dissolve and is tough to touch. This means that your props and running gear will be protected all season long. In many cases the coating will last multiple seasons depending on usage and location.

How Can I Remove AquaMarine Prop From My Propeller?

Attach a wire brush to a drill or a 3M scotch brite / sanding disc to a grinder and gently abrade the surface to remove the coating. Unlike traditional anti foul paint, AquaMarine PROP is biocide and heavy metal free, so there are fewer pollutants and lower health risks when performing maintenance.

Why Am I Seeing A Buildup of Foul On The Coating?

Unlike traditional antifoul coatings that are harmful to aquatic life, AquaMarine foul release coatings are designed to remove, not kill, organisms. The buildup will easily wipe away from the coated surfaces, or will 'self-clean' when the vessels is used at high speeds, due to the 'non-stick' properties of AquaMarine. For more information on this, please see the Prop Maintenance page.

How Easy Is AquaMarine HULL To Apply?

AquaMarine HULL is extremely easy to apply, just one generous coat of the coloured AquaMarine BASE and one thin coat of the clear foul release. Time between coats can vary with air temperature, but usually can be done one straight after the other.

Do I have to remove the hull's old antifouling coating?

Traditional antifoul paints are designed to deteriorate over time, so all of the the old ablative paint needs to be removed before AquaMarine is applied. If the epoxy is in good condition, this can be 'scratched' with some sandpaper to provide a good key.

If I Have Already Applied An Epoxy To The Hull Beforehand, When Should AquaMarine HULL Be Applied To That?

This should be done when the epoxy is still tacky (a thumbprint can be left but none of the coating is removed), AquaMarine BASE should then be applied to ensure a strong bond between the coatings. The time will depend on the epoxy used and air temperature. If the epoxy has fully cured, it will need 'scratching' with some sandpaper. The primer should NEVER be applied when the epoxy is still wet.

How Much Paint Do I Need?

1 litre of AquaMarine HULL covers 10m2 and depending on hull shape, a 2.5 litre kit will cover:

  • A long keel sloop up to 31-33ft; or
  • A modern fin keel yacht up to 33-36ft; or
  • A powerboat of 33-36ft (though this can vary depending on the beam of the vessel).

Please see our paint calculator or ring the service team on 01282 873320 for help.

If The Boat Is New Without Any Paint On The Hull, Can I Apply The Primer Directly To It, Or Do I Need To Put On A Sealing Layer First?

You do not need to apply a sealing layer first. Just lightly abrade the surface of new gel coat with wet/dry sand paper, then apply the AquaMarine system as directed on the maintenance page application instructions.

How Long Will AquaMarine HULL Last?

AquaMarine HULL does not wear out or ablate meaning that it will keep providing protection season after season. We give our hull coating a five year warranty when applied and use correctly.

In The Event That I Damage The Coating During Grounding Or Chain Anchor Wear, Can I Repair It Easily?

Yes, an area can be touched up. You can do that after 1 week or 1 year, and there are no time scale over-coating issues. Depending on the extent of the damage, both the old Base and the hull layers should be overlapped with the new coating by a minimum of 25mm.

How Do I Remove AquaMarine HULL From My Boat?

To remove the foul release coating you will need to use a carbide scraper or on larger applications a grit blaster may be needed.

Why Am I Seeing A Buildup Of Foul On The Coating?

Unlike traditional anti foul paints that are harmful to marine life, AquaMarine HULL is designed to remove fouling, rather than killing the organisms. Due to AquaMarine's 'non-stick' properties, any buildup that does accumulate is easily removed by simply wiping down the coated areas. Although the coated surfaces will be largely self-cleaning when travelling at high speeds, we recommend cleaning the hull once a month to maintain the coatings maximum performance.

Will It Save Fuel?

Yes, especially on a power boat. Our research indicates an approximate 10% saving in fuel consumption at cruising speed. The ultra-smooth surfce of the foul release coating results in less drag, so you'll go quicker and spend less fuel getting there.

Will AquaMarine HULL Prevent Osmosis?

Though AquaMarine is hydrophobic, it will allow the hull to 'breathe'. We recommend that a bare hull is treated with 2 layers of epoxy before the application of AquaMarine to ensure that an impenetrable barrier is created.

Will AquaMarine HULL Save Me Time & Money?

Because AquaMarine does not degrade, ablate or wear out, the coating itself will last longer than traditional antifoul products, meaning less time out of the water reapplying coatings. In addition to this, fouling struggles to attach to coated surfaces, so any buildup is simply wiped away. This can be done in the water using a 'Scrubbis' brush, or with a powerwasher when lifted, again saving time compared to using scrapers and chisels when traditional antifoul has failed.

How Easy Is It To Apply?

Very. There's no need to mix it, no additives, and no airborne particles or biocides to worry about. Simply apply to the rib for better streamlining and fuel efficiency.

Will It Save Fuel?

Yes most certainly. Our research indicates there are savings to be made on fuel at cruising speeds. The ultra-smooth surface of the rib coating results in less drag, so you'll go quicker and spend less fuel getting there.

Is it a coloured coating?

AquaMarine RIB is transparent and therefore, dries completely clear.

Will AquaMarine RIB protect my boat from punctures?

While AquaMarinewill protect your boat and streamline it, it will not fully protect it from punctures, which tend to be caused by clashes with sizeable rocks or stones. It will however, provide a protection that will make cleaning it much easier.
