Ultrasonic - Shaking Up Antifouling

March 17, 2017

Ultrasonic Antifouling Advancements

Antifouling is set to become a lot less popular and eventually banned across the world. This is due to the harmful nature of the biocides which are leached out into the ocean environment. Its reign as the number one, or better said, universal choice of fouling treatment will soon diminish.

Glistening over the horizon and making waves throughout the boating industry are foul release paints and ultrasonic antifouling systems which are much more effective, economical, environmentally friendly and longer lasting. If these modern developments of shaking the dragging water critters off your vessel have you scratching your head with curiosity, then read on and explore what these options can offer.

Time for change

Various foul release paint options have enlightened boaters everywhere as to what other choices are available moving forward as well as the by-product benefits they can provide. Foul release paints offer effective relief from fouling without the layers upon layers of decrepit build up that antifouling paint causes.  Foul release is thicker, more resistant to corrosion (therefore longer lasting), toxic biocide free and in the long run, more affordable.

Many of the same superior benefits can be offered by ultra-sonic antifouling systems. These systems are a relatively new development and a very promising step forward. The essential mechanism of action for ultrasonic antifouling is an electronic system placed strategically at various locations on a vessel which emits ultrasonic vibrations at low frequency.

The system will hinder the adhesion of fouling organisms by creating a film of water molecules that can implode making it extremely difficult for fouling to attach. Micro fouling like slime and algae are classically very difficult to tackle but with ultra-sonic vibrations can be ‘cleaned off’. This in effect aids the defence against the bulkier macro fouling like barnacles from finding a surface on which to settle.

This system can also help with other areas of boat surfaces that are less well protected by using antifouling such as the Hull openings - water jets, tunnel thrusters and appendages (pods and stern drives). Additionally, the system can be applied to all surfaces apart from wood.

Complimentary cause

The main aims of these alternate and ever progressing methods for fouling resistance is; the conservation of the marine environment; general health and safety improvement for applicators and boaters; more efficient, less monitored systems; and most importantly – more effective fouling prevention. As a result, these benefits will consequently mean that boats improve speed, manoeuvrability, and fuel efficiency.

The combination of an ultra-sonic system and a foul release coating can be the best possible way to ensure your fouling shields are at optimal performance.  A super slippery surface which prevents the vast majority of fouling species attaching and also making it extremely easy to jet wash off the stronger bonding fouling, along with an ultra-sonic system covers all bases and maintains an environmentally friendly ethos. Ultrasonic transducers are powered by electricity which can be fuelled by solar cells fitted to the boat – another handy feature!

All in all, whether you choose to coat with a foul release paint or use an ultra-sonic electronic system, implementing one or both of them sooner rather than later will only be a move in the right direction.
