Prop Foul Release: What you need to know

Propeller foul release coatings

Everything you need to know & the benefits of AquaMarine FRC

Every single year, boat owners everywhere not only have the issue of what foul release or anti fouling solution they opt for on their boat hulls but they also need to worry about their propellers.

Most owners who have applied some kind of propeller anti foul or prop foul release usually find that into the season it’s already wearing off, allowing barnacles and other fouling to adhere to it. Equally, there are many who actually doubt their effectiveness and durability because it seems, they aren’t all they’re cracked up to be.

What happens when fouling attaches to your prop?

One of the biggest issues is losing knots because as the fouling grows, so does the drag on your engine. This in turn means you’re using more fuel to achieve the same speed. In fact, many boat owners have concurred that they have noticed a severe reduction in performance once the props get coated with things like barnacles and other fouling.

Using traditional Anti foul for Props

While many people apply antifoul to their propellers you do actually need to be aware of the electrolysis that happens between the paint you’re putting on and the propeller itself. This can actually be damaging and seeing as many boat owners seem to talk of paint coming off very quickly or being largely ineffective – it’s definitely food for thought.

So what’s the solution?

Foul release could offer you the exact solution you’ve been searching for. Unlike traditional prop paints, it creates a super-smooth layer across the propeller and it does not work by killing (or rather attempting to kill marine fouling). It repels it. This means that when you’re running your engine, anything that’s on the propeller temporarily simply can’t adhere to it. The force of the water essentially washes most of it away, leaving you with a nice clean prop, higher knots and of course, less fuel use.

Divers love AquaMarine Foul Release

For divers and of course boat owners, what we’ve seen is that foul release makes maintenance so much easier. Divers can wipe away any fouling in minutes or a blast through the water will do it.
