For those people who coat their Rib's or inflatable dinghies each season, there are still a few who simply don’t bother. However, is this really the best way to protect your investment? Did you know you can actually go faster and use less fuel when your RIB or inflatable dinghy is coated with a proper foul release solution?
In our top ten list we run through some of the best reasons to invest in some coating for your dinghy so you can really enjoy it to the full.
1. Top Performance
Those people who coat their dinghies do actually enjoy better performance under marine conditions. As well as using less fuel (because there’s even less resistance when you go through the water), you’ll also enjoy going that little bit faster!
2. Longer Lasting
The sad truth of the matter is that with a RIB or inflatable, you need to take care to preserve its life. Coating them tends to prolong life as it helps to protect the tubes from damage in certain situations.
3. UV Exposure
When you use your dinghy, you are exposing it to the sunshine. This may be enjoyable for you but over time this exposure will take its told on your boat. UV goes into the rubber and it can weaken it in places.
The ocean carries a lot more than just water. These days you’re contending with pollution on a much higher scale. This will impact your dinghy, whether it’s PVC or Hypalon. Imagine, lots of salt and pollution eating its way in. While washing it is an inevitable part of owning it, you still can’t beat protecting it further.
5. Organic fouling
If your inflatable is kept in water most of the time, then you’ll also have to deal with fouling. Be it barnacles or slime, you won’t want this staying on your boat. This is especially true if the inflatable tubes are in the water.
Topside paints for inflatables tend to have a negative reputation when it comes to durability. This can lead to scuffs and even more troublesome: punctures. Therefore, an inflatable coating will help to keep the tubes from harm.
7. Traditional antifouling can do more damage than good
Using a specific RIB / inflatable dinghy coating is better than using standard antifoul paint. Why? Regular antifoul paint could end up attacking the rubber of the tube. Therefore, you will end up doing more harm than good.
8. Better coating means less need for repairs
While the inevitable repair is a regular occurrence you can avoid them to some degree with a good coating. Where you may have ended up with a scrap and therefore thinning of the rubber, you are getting extra protection with a Rib coating.
9. Ease of Cleaning
Ever had your inflatable taken out of the water and discovered an abundance of marine life attached to it that was a pain to clean? Coating your Rib will actually make cleaning much easier. However, ensure you use a decent foul release coating. This will mean a jet wash is likely to remove most of the fouling fairly easily.
